A recurrent observation in the study of the realization of direct objects in some Romance languages lies in the fact that animacy features seem to determine the form the object takes. In this paper, I investigate phenomena that involve animacy features and that were observed separately in the literature on Romance langauges: Differential Object Marking, leismo, and the Person-Case Constraint. The goal was to analyze these phenomena in comparison to the null object in Brazilian Portuguese, with the aim of determining the role that animacy has in syntax. The results of the research show that, in fact, animacy is relevant for syntax. Based on those results, I advance a proposal that intends to accountfor the phenomena and supports a formal approach to the referentiality hierarchies found in the non-formalist literature.
