Abstract

This work aims to analyze the National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) as a normative document that materializes a language policy in Brazil and its repercussions for the teaching and learning of English in a hegemonic power relations in the Global South. As a theoretical framework for the discussion on language policies and the teaching of English, we draw on the following authors: Silva (2024); Calvet (2002), Rajagopalan (2013), Spolsky (2016); Shohamy (2006), Maciel (2013), Pennycook (2016), and Silva; Xavier (2021). Regarding the method used in this research, it has employed the qualitative research paradigm (Denzin; Lincoln, 2006), through bibliographic and documentary research (Kripka; Scheller; Bonotto, 2015) to support the critical analysis of the document. The main contributions of this research include the possibility of questioning the language policy of BNCC—driven by the importance of the teacher’s role in a movement to decolonize it—and rethinking new language policies which may genuinely reflect the diversity of Brazilian students.
